Acclaimed as an “interactive paradise” by the NY Times, the American Jazz Museum brings to life the great American art form of jazz. Recognizing the limited appeal of this musical genre to the young, the Museum included Jazz Discovery, an area designed to engage the pre-school to preteen age group. “Found object” musical sculptures illustrated by Charlene Potts can be played, providing inspiration for children to create their own instruments from barrels full of lids, wood blocks, cans, dowels, and other common items. Kids can try their feet at doing the Lindy Hop by following the colorfully illustrated pattern cut into the carpeting. A hub-cap bedecked bandstand and a velcro musical staff mural encourages spontaneous performance and composition.
