The Beyond Birmingham exhibit serves to place the civil rights movement of the United States within the context of the on-going global struggle for human rights. An exhibit vocabulary featuring full scale color images of people of various ethnicities and rich fabrics from around the world is contrasted with rusted metal, chain link fencing, and concrete to create a heightened sense of tension, imprisonment, totalitarianism, and state control. Video monitors set at skewed angles in a crumbling pile of rubble introduce The Universal Declaration of Human Rights in an animated format produced by Amnesty International. Full scale photographs of individuals currently seeking asylum in the United States personalize audio accounts of human rights abuses while providing context for the discussion of the broader issues. A computer interactive allows access to the current case files of 50 victims of human rights abuses around the world and encourage individual action to help affect change. |
