The British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 inspired Francis Scott Key to pen the "Star Spangled Banner". 200 years later, fragments from this war and the fort's past are on display in a new exhibit highlighting artifacts from archeological digs carried out over the last several decades. From cannon ball shards to uniform buttons, bayonets to animal bones, clay pipes to medicine bottles, these fragments reveal glimpses into daily life at the fort.

Inspired by the archeologists' documentation and field notes, proun designed a system of graphic panels to complement the displays with clarity and elegance.

Fort Adams in Newport, Rhode Island, was established on July 4, 1799 as a First System coastal fortification. It was first garrisoned in August 1841, functioning as an active Army post until 1950. During this time the fort was active in five major wars (the Mexican-American War, American Civil War, Spanish-American, World War I and World War II) but never fired a shot in anger.

A series of graphic panels designed by proun, complement existing Waysides and interpret some of the innovative features of the fort's design, life at the fort, and the impact of the fort on the surrounding community.

		<description>Hampton National Historic Site
Exhibit Design: Wondercabinet Interpretive Design, Inc.
Exhibit Graphics: proun
Exhibit Fabrication: Mystic Scenic Studios, Inc.
Design/Build Budget: $200,000

At it's peak in the early 1800s, Hampton Estate had over 300 slaves, more than any other plantation in Virginia. Interpretive graphics and hands-on interactives direct visitors’ attention to the extraordinary details that seemed ordinary 200 years ago—the deprivation of personal liberty and a person’s value based solely on their ability to work.

The graphic aesthetic for the historic structures exhibits reflect the oppressed life styles of the people that lived there. A limited color palette and sans serif fonts set justified reference their stifled existence. Information is displayed in a very direct, dispassionate and analytical format to emphasize the loss of individual identity. Where ever possible, photos of real people from the Hampton archives are used to allow for maximum emotional connection with the visitors. Illustrations are used as needed but will appear as black and white or sepia tones, adding to the sense of anonymity. In contrast, first person accounts set in script text reflect the individual behind the quote.

		<description>Cody, Wyoming
Exhibit Design: N.B. Paffett Associates, Inc.
Exhibit Graphics: proun
Area: 10,000 sf

Who didn't grow up playing cowboys and indians? Buffalo Bill, Chief Sitting Bull, Annie Oakley . . . if it weren't for the entrepreneurial genius of William F. Cody, these names would be lost in obscurity and our heroes may well have been Oliver Twist and the Artful Dodger.

William F. Cody was Buffalo Bill—a showman and a businessman. But he was also a scout for the U.S. military, a pony express rider, a bison hunter, a trapper, a guide, rancher, hotelier, and husband among other things. Best known for the Wild West Show that entertained millions across the country and even in Europe, his reenactments of Custer's Last Stand solidified the world's perception of the American Wild West.

N. B. Paffett Associates, Inc. was contracted to lead the design of the new exhibits interpreting the life and times of William F. Cody. proun developed the overall graphic aesthetic for the in-house design staff to implement. Typography inspired by show posters and colors informed by Frederick Remington’s ethereal impressions of the West flavor the visual interpretation of the subject and complement the original artwork, photos, and artifacts in the collection. The fonts for the exhibit graphics have been selected for their legibility and a character that reflects Cody’s personality. The Thesis family has it’s roots in the woodcut fonts of 19c posters and projects strength and confidence. Conversely, Atma is modeled after old style fonts such as Garamond and Caslon and provides a human touch. Atma will be used exclusively for quotes by Cody.

Below, studies show the development of the graphic aesthetic for the new permanent exhibits.

The history of North Carolina has lessons for the entire country. Rich in natural resources, the state’s plains, piedmont, and mountains attracted habitation over many centuries. This new exhibit chronicles human existence in this region from the ancient peoples to the influx of the Scotts/Irish and other Europeans to present day. Agriculture, industry, slavery, war, and politics are among the topics covered in exhibits rich with artifacts and media.

proun was contracted by CCA to develop the graphics for the exhibits. The exhibits blend iconic elements such as a log cabin, farm and industrial equipment, and military artifacts with scenic recreations and period graphics. Interactive exhibits provide hands-on interpretation throughout the experience. Elegantly understated graphics infuse content in a consistent format while carefully coordinated color palettes signal change in content and tone from one chapter to the next.

Exhibit Fabrication: Mystic Scenic Studios, Inc.
Opening: 2012

Nobody likes going to the hospital. But imagine getting sick or injured in the late-1800s when standard treatments for ailments included mercury, arsenic, and strychnine and the instruments in the doctor's bag had an unsettling resemblance to the tools in your dad's garage!

proun, in collaboration with Wondercabinet Interpretive Design and Mystic Scenic Studios has designed exhibits interpreting state-of-the-art medical technology at a Civil War era hospital in Fort Davis, Texas. Interpretive panels feature profiles of five patients that spent time in the post hospital.Their stories are told over successive panels and entice visitors to the Post Hospital building across the compound. Once there, visitors can find out how these patients fared and, through simple interactive exhibits, try their own hand at diagnosing treatments.

The graphics for the Post Hospital exhibits draw on the vernacular of medical catalogs and packaging of the mid-19th century. Panel shapes with the rounded shoulders and tapered sides of medicine bottles along with Victorian type treatments reference the visual language of an apothecary. The color palette is restrained, mostly black and white, with accents drawn from the surrounding natural landscape and man-made structures.

Look around you. Anything built before the advent of the calculator was probably designed with the aid of a slide rule. Invented around 1620, slide rules have been used by engineers, architects, tradesmen, doctors, scientists, dieticians, designers and many more to calculate everything from concrete to confections and from nuclear blasts to your child's IQ.

proun worked with the Debbie Douglas and the MIT Museum staff to design an exhibit that showcases their vast collection of vintage and rare slide rules. Bold, direct typography and a simple color palette allow the collection to stand on it's own.

Beat icon, Jack Kerouac, was born to a French Canadian family in Lowell, MA in 1922. His early writings are filled with the influences of this former industrial town—it's canals, bridges, mills, and churches made a lasting impression on this major American author. As a young writer, Kerouac set out to discover himself and the world around him. The result was over 30 books and publications, the most famous of which, On the Road, became an anthem to a post-war generation in search of identity.

proun designed a permanent exhibit on Kerouac in the form of a richly layered triptych road map that gives a brief overview of his life and orients visitors to points of interest including his childhood home, the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, and his grave site in Kerouac Park. A listening station provides access to Kerouac readings and commentary.

In the late 1800s, the expansion of the US Navy and growing complexity of shipbuilding led to the creation of the Naval Architecture program at MIT. Since then, it has evolved to address the ever-increasing technological demands as the world turns to the oceans for energy, food, minerals, defense, and transportation.

proun worked with the Director of the Ocean Engineering program to develop a simple, direct, and elegant display that provides and overview of the outstanding achievements of this program.

Visitor’s learn about who lived there, how they entertained, and what influences they had on the building and surrounding landscape.

Silhouettes of selected Presidents are accompanied by clues as to who they are.
Did you guess correctly? Stamp your card at the embossing station for the answer.
